This Friday Google Removed began California Some people will no longer see news sites in their search results. This is a trial run to see what happens if the State Legislature passes a law that requires search engines to pay media for links to their content.
Google stated in a post on its blog that they are using “a short-term test” for a very small number of users to gauge the effect of legislation.
It also announced that it would stop making new investments into the Californian news industry. This includes its partnerships with media organizations, and product licensing.

This bill would force tech giants like Google, Facebook and Microsoft, to pay media companies a percentage of their advertising revenues for links to content. The fee would be determined by a panel of judges through arbitration.

The bill was passed by the California Assembly last year, despite strong opposition from large tech companies and their lobbying. It would need to be passed by the California Senate later in this year to become law.
