Meta-testing new message feature in Threads App
Meta is testing new messaging capabilities that leverage Instagram’s Inbox. Users can now send messages from within the Threads application.
Threads by Meta has now reached 130 million users. However, there is still one complaint that persists: The lack of direct message capabilities. Those who are hankering after direct messaging within Threads will soon be able to find comfort in a brand new option.
Meta is testing messaging capabilities that leverage Instagram’s Inbox. Users can now send new messages from within the Threads application. Users of Threads have noticed that a new “message button” has appeared on the profiles of other users, replacing the old “mention” option. Engadget was informed by a Meta spokesperson that they are “testing” the capability to send a thread message to Instagram.
Threads does not have its own inbox despite this new update. This raises questions regarding its integration. Adam Mosseri has reiterated that he does not want to create a separate threads inbox. He prefers the Instagram platform’s inbox integrated into Threads. Meta’s spokesperson confirmed that this testing will not include DMs in Threads.
Although not a complete DM, users could benefit from the ability to send messages directly through Threads instead of switching to Instagram. Accessing these messages and replying to them will require users to navigate to Instagram.
Mosseri, who has been a part of the Threads team since November 2016, outlined some challenges. In an article published in November, Mosseri outlined these challenges. “If we cannot make Instagram’s inbox compatible with Threads, then we will have to choose between 1) mirroring Instagram’s inbox into Threads while dealing with weird notification routing, or 2) building a completely separate Threads’ inbox, which would mean having two duplicate message threads for each friend with the same handle in two apps.”
