Polygon MATIC co-founder Mihailo Bjelic appears to be in Is Verkle tree needed for Ethereum? This debate took place in the X App, which suggests there is uncertainty surrounding Ethereum’s data storage and optimal functionality. Bjelic asked if it was the best move to switch Ethereum over to Verkle Trees. The crypto-boss argued that the zkification of Ethereum’s current network was likely to happen in the future. Buterin responded in no time. He said that zkification of keccak merkle patricia trees, with the worst-case witness size being 300MB, is non-starter. ZK-ifying the keccak-merkle-patricia trees, with their worst-case 300-MB-witness sizes, is not possible.

Normally, the primary data structure used within the Ethereum network comes from Merkle Patricia Trees. There is a plan for Verkle Trees to replace it due to its shortcomings. They have shorter proofs, and are more bandwidth-efficient. Bjelic said that the existing structure could accommodate the benchmark of 300MB set by Ethereum’s co-founder. Bjelic claimed that this could be achieved in just 12 seconds of total block time. This would likely require 10 server-class processors. Polygon zkEVM makes a push to upgrade
Bjelic’s talk about Polygon zkEVM follows a change earlier in the year that saw the protocol transform into a Type 2 ZK -EVM. The transition will make Polygon zkEVM a type 2 ZK EM, allowing developers to use their code on Polygon zk -EVM in the same way they do on Ethereum.
The upgrade will introduce a new paradigm for smart contract developers. In February, the Etrog Upgrade was implemented on the mainnet with a timelock of 10 days.
There is still speculation about upgrading to Type 2 ZK -EVM, especially since the Polygon zkEVM was down for almost 10 hours nearly a month after Etrog Upgrade launched. The issue with the Polygon mainnet beta zkEVM has now been fixed.
