The Indian Computer Emergency Response TeamCERT-InThe Detector has detected numerous security flaws in computers. Microsoft Windows OS (v10 & v11).
The vulnerabilities are due to insufficient implementations of the Mark of the Web feature (MotW), and improper access restriction within the proxy driver, in Microsoft Windows. SmartScreen bypasses MotW and lets malware execute on the target system. Threat actors can exploit these vulnerabilities through specially-crafted requests. “Successful exploitations could allow attackers to bypass security and compromise targeted systems,” states the CERT In alert.
Microsoft acknowledged that there was a cyber-threat and released a security patch for Windows OS devices.
Redmond-based Microsoft has thanked Andreas Klopsch, Peter Girnus, (gothburz), of Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, and Dmitrij Lenz, and Vlad Stolyarov, of Google’s Threat Analysis Group for their contributions to timely detection of these vulnerabilities.
To protect their devices from malware, device owners should upgrade to the most recent security updates for Windows (versions 10 and 11).
