MEMPHIS (Tenn.) (WMC). The City of Memphis has launched a new approach to crime prevention that encourages small business.
Small businesses can receive up to $1,000,000 over four years to implement the city’s plans. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) initiative.

The funding was approved by the EDGE (EDGE of Memphis and Shelby County) on Wednesday.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young said, “As part our commitment to fostering community safety and economic vitality, we’re proud to partner up with EDGE to introduce a pioneering initiative that combines crime prevention with economic empowerment.” By investing in this initiative, we are not only able to spur economic growth but also create safer communities that empower residents and discourage criminal activity. We are changing the story of our communities, transforming challenges into new opportunities and creating a better future for everyone.
Officials from the city say that CPTED uses “urban and architectural design, and management of built-up and natural environments to discourage crime.” According to A release This strategy, developed by EDGE is recognized internationally for its effectiveness in reducing and preventing crime.
Small businesses that qualify in zones of high crime can receive CPTED funding in the form or reimbursement grants and loans.
The structure and eligibility criteria for the ICED loan program are similar to EDGE.
