Update for Saturday, April 20th: Apple’s new sensor is pushing the boundaries with Sony’s new stacked sensors. But the quest to collect more information with higher megapixels and more accurate image scanners continues.
Adam Juniper reports Apple has announced plans to equip the iPhone 17 with a camera that boasts a 144 megapixel sensor. Three lenses would have 48-megapixel cameras. All the cameras on the iPhone 16 should be upgraded to 48 Megapixels. The iPhone 17 Pro, however, will add 48 megapixels to both the telephoto lens and ultra wide camera.
Apple may not default to 48-megapixel images. This extra data will enable advanced technologies, including pixel binning (combining four pixels of the sensor into a single but accurate pixel) and future AI-based methods Apple will undoubtedly debut at its Worldwide Developer Conference on May 20, 2024.
Many Android smartphones compete with 100-megapixel cameras. Apple will not be able to match this in the current iPhone, but future iPhones can have 100-megapixel cameras.

Apple’s iPhone 16 smartphone family will be the first to join the AI revolution in terms of its software. It includes a number of AI features that are designed to enhance the way images are taken, edited and processed by millions of users. AI routines are not new.
