Students shot during protest in Nigeria
Two students at Plateau State University in Bokkos were shot last week by Nigerian security forces during a protest against the lack of protection provided to Christian villages from attacks by Fulani militias. Release International reports, in support of an investigation, that Nigerian authorities have claimed that the two students were struck by unintentional bullets. Over 40 Christians from villages with a majority of Christian farmers were killed in Fulani militants’ attacks over a seven-day period. The army also fired at protesters.
Finnish MP faces trial for second time over remarks about marriage
Paivi Rasanen will face trial for the third time in Finland on charges of “hate speech”. In the case, she posted on social media in 2019 her thoughts about marriage and in 2004 a church booklet referred to a biblical passage “male and woman he created”. On Tuesday the Supreme Court of Finland accepted an appeal from the State Prosecutor, after Ms Rasanen had been unanimously cleared of all charges by both the Helsinki District Court as well as the Court of Appeal. The appeal date has not yet been set. Ms Rasanen stated that she is “ready to continue defending free speech and religion before Supreme Court and, if necessary, before the European Court of Human Rights”.
