The island’s meteorological administration reported that two earthquakes of a combined magnitude of 6.1 struck Hualien in the east of the country on Saturday. No immediate damage was reported.
In the early morning hours, buildings in Taipei were shaken by two quakes that occurred within a half-hour of one another.
First, the quake was 24.9km deep (15.5miles) and struck just off Hualien’s coast. The second, with a 5.8 magnitude, had a distance of 18.9km (11.7miles) and also hit an identical location. TaiwanThe weather service of’s said.

In 2016, a southern Taiwan quake caused the deaths of more than 100 people, while in 1999 a quake with a magnitude of 7.3 killed over 2,000.
