On June 20, 1893, American woman Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murders of her father and step-mother the previous year, in one of the most country’s most sensational court cases.
Borden’s wealthy industrialist father, Andrew, and stepmother, Abby, were murdered with a hatchet at their Massachusetts home.
During the police investigation, Lizzie gave inconsistent statements, leading to her arrest after a contentious inquest.
Despite circumstantial evidence, prosecutors struggled to definitively link Lizzie to the crimes and she was acquitted by a jury.
The double murder remains unsolved.
