Xbox unveiled its upcoming Proteus Controller, a modular “snap and play” kit for gamers with disabilities. As video games evolve and the mediums by which users interact with the virtual world grow increasingly complex, players with disabilities may encounter more and more obstacles in experiencing their beloved franchises. Fortunately, Xbox announced it was investing in another possible solution for their differently-abled users, which promised a personalized experience that people with disabilities could customize to suit their unique needs.
In celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Xbox’s gaming accessibility team expressed its continued commitment to setting the standard for gaming accessibility features, with the members crediting their users for their continued support in creating an inclusive worldwide community. Xbox expressed its appreciation for all its fans, stating it aimed to provide a comfortable experience for the differently abled and how the company will continue to implement inclusive practices while partnering with members of the disability community and nonprofit organizations to better shape their projects in the future.

Xbox Game Pass adds another game to its library of titles, this time a first-person shooter that should appeal to many genre enthusiasts.
An Xbox blog post revealed one such initiative was the upcoming release of the Proteus Controller. Developed in collaboration with accessibility peripheral manufacturer ByoWave, the Proteus Controller is an incredible customizable gaming controller with “snap and play” parts that can be easily connected and disconnected to provide the optimal modular interface for players with disabilities.
Xbox Presents the Proteus Controller
The Proteus Controller will be compatible with PCs and Microsoft’s Xbox devices straight out of the box, meaning users won’t need to go through the hassle of finding the proper driver online and installing it into their chosen system. The Proteus Controller is currently available for preorder through ByoWave’s official website and comes with a $299 price tag, with the first batch of units expected to ship out sometime in fall 2024.
Xbox additionally announced it was rolling out more changes to improve accessibility and access to community resources. This includes a new categorization for Xbox support articles based on the specific type of disability, with pages sorted into speech, cognitive, vision, mobility, and hearing. Xbox will also be adding updates for users who use other accessibility peripherals, which includes its Xbox Adaptive Controller.
With the increasing prevalence of Xbox and other game companies in the modern cultural zeitgeist, it’s easy to take for granted how widespread video games have become. However, some new users will inevitably be differently-abled and cannot experience various titles in the same way other gamers do, but at the same time, it is heartening to know that many members of the community agree that supporting accessibility features for video games is also one way of spreading their passion for the medium.
