The Biden Administration has urged social media giants, including Meta (NASDAQ:META), TikTok (BDNCE) and X, to bolster their efforts to stymie the surge of antisemitic posts and comments, according to a report Tuesday by Bloomberg.
Representatives from Alphabet (GOOG)(GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta, TikTok and X, met last week with Deborah Lipstadt, US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, according to the report.
Lipstadt requested each company designate a policy team member to address the issue, train key personnel to identify antisemitism and publicly report trends in anti-Jewish content.
Although these types of comments and content have proliferated for years on social media platforms, the hate speech has accelerated following Israel’s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorists attacks by Hamas.
Earlier this month, Meta’s independent Oversight Board received thousands of comments on whether the Palestinian phrase “from the river to the sea” qualifies as hate speech. It was the highest number of comments the board had received on an issue since former President Donald Trump’s accounts were banned on Facebook and Instagram after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, according to NBC News.
The Anti-Defamation League also tracked a spike in antisemitic conspiracy theories on social media platforms after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill in March that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S.
