CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The new Amazon fulfillment center in Clarksville will hire 1,500 employees, and hiring is ongoing now. But what does that mean and how does it work? This week, Divina Mims with Amazon joins Josh Ward with the IDB and Charlie Koon on Clarksville Conversations to talk about the batch-hiring process, how to apply, and what working at Amazon is like.
Military hiring
Sam Stephenson served for seven years as a communications strategy and operations officer in the Marine Corps. He’s now a public relations manager for Amazon, after going through their Hiring Our Heroes program. Through the partnership with the Department of Defense, Stephenson worked a 12-month fellowship with Amazon while on active duty.
“The opportunities are endless; it can be legal, PR, operations, robotics, tech,” Stephenson explained at a recent news conference . “The purpose is to get active-duty service members some real-world/outside of the military experience, but also, if all works out, a full-time job.”
The program is not just geared towards active military, but also their spouses. “We really care about military spouses, and recognize the sacrifices they have made to being a part of the military family and we have plenty of opportunities for fellowships for spouses as well,” Stephenson said.
Chris Self with the Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council noted that with the companies coming in, veterans are seeing more opportunities in advanced manufacturing. “Right now, we are capturing between 34-36% of the transition military coming out of Fort Campbell,” Self said. “We feel we can get to 40% with the right careers available, and I think we are bringing in the right careers with Amazon.”
