“As a standard course of business, we continually evaluate our store portfolio, using various criteria to ensure we are meeting the needs of our customers,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We do not take the decision to close stores lightly.”
In April 2023, the downtown Starbucks became the first in the region to successfully unionize, joining Workers United. The downtown Starbucks became the 300th location in the country to unionize after a wave of organizing efforts began in late 2021.
“We have engaged Workers United to collaborate on next steps, including transfer options, for the 7 partners currently employed at this location,” the Starbucks spokesperson said.
The DOCO coffee shop was located next to Golden 1 Center and near several businesses including Tipsy Putt, Sauced, Estelle Bakery and Patisserie, Haagen-Dazs and Fizz Champagne and Bubbles Bar.
There are other Starbucks locations in downtown Sacramento that are all within blocks of each other. There are Starbucks locations on L and 10th Streets, L and 12th Streets at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, and at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center.
The DOCO location closure comes a month after Starbucks shut down an iconic East Sacramento coffee shop on 1401 Alhambra Boulevard.
At the time, Starbucks said the closure was “temporary” and employees were given the offer to transfer to other locations, but the company didn’t provide information about a reopening date.
