JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Starbucks workers at the I55 & Northside location filed a petition for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Tuesday.
They are joined with 17 other Starbucks stores across the country.
Over 10,000 Starbucks employees are petitioning for protection over issues like respect, living wages, racial and gender equality, and fair scheduling.
Employees stated that they “believe that forming a union is necessary to address these concerns.”
Since the start of the Starbucks employee union, employees from over 440 stores have won union elections with the NLRB.
“When they notice our visible distress due to being stretched thin, our kindest customers often remind us to remember that we’re just making coffee, not saving lives,” states Madeline McDaniel, a shift supervisor of 2 years.
She goes on to say, “It’s difficult to internalize this truth because of how much Starbucks expects from us, but we feel our efforts and successes aren’t reflected adequately. We’re voting to unionize because we strongly believe that after an entire day of being pushed to our limits, we shouldn’t have to go home only to worry about whether or not we made enough money to afford to feed our families.”
