SAN DIMAS – Frederick C. Hammer, retired Public Relations Director of General Motors Central Foundry Division, died at his home in San Dimas, CA this past Thursday, June 15, 2006. He was 87 years of age. A resident of San Dimas since his retirement from GM in 1983, he was a Saginaw resident throughout his 33 year career with Central Foundry Division and headed the division’s public relations and internal communication s activities during those 26 years. Born May 18, 1919 in Upland, Nebraska, he attended primary and secondary schools in Vassar, MI, graduated from Vassar High in 1936 and later attended University of Wisconsin and Delta College. From 1937 to 1941, he worked as a reporter and editor for the Tuscola County (MI) Pioneer-Times. From 1941 to 1942, he was a reporter and news bureau chief for Booth daily newspapers in Flint and Bay City. During World II, he was decorated for distinguished service with the 14th Air Corps in China. Burma and India. In 1942 he married Christine Swartzendruber of Pigeon, MI. From 1946 to 1950, he was a personnel director at Standard Products Co. in St. Claire, MI and in 1950, began his career with GM in Saginaw. He is past director of the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce, member of the Saginaw GM Public Affairs Committee, the Saginaw Club, the Public Relations Society of America and American Foundryman’s Society. Survivors include his four children, Fred J. Hammer of Pasadena, CA, Carole Hinkle and LeAnne Hamilton of San Dimas, Ca, Brian Hammer of Thousand Oaks, CA and his six grandchildren, Chris Pierce, Paul Hammer, Annie Hammer, Scott Hamilton, Adam Hammer, Michael Hammer. Services were held Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, CA.
