During the Disney 2024 Upfront Red Carpet, I spoke with Jason Parham and executive producer Prentice Penny about Black Twitter: A People’s History. The docuseries, which is currently streaming on Hulu, is based on Parham’s WIRED cover story, A People’s History of Black Twitter.
This three-part docuseries charts the rise, movements, voices, and memes that made Black Twitter an influential and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life.
“I mean, it’s inspiring to see sort of my original story in WIRED now become a TV project,” Parham shared with me. “And to work with Prentice, who is on Insecure, which is like a TV institution for me. But to see the project really come to life in a new way has meant so much to me and has been really empowering.”
Penny then continued, adding, “Yeah, I think for me, it’s just been obviously fun in the beginning, right, in terms of being able to take his article and adapt it, and do something in a new space that I hadn’t done before. But then, obviously, as we’re making the doc, Elon buys the platform and it all changes. So, you feel a different level of responsibility to make sure you’re doing right by the culture, for sure.”
