Iowa City — Leaders in Iowa City are partnering with several non-profits to collect unwanted items — and help movers — in eastern Iowa.
That partnership includes:
- Antelope Lending Library
- Crowded Closet
- Houses into Homes
- Table to Table
Right now, they are looking for common goods that are typically needed during a move. Those goods are being collected at their “donation drive-thru” event.
You can find a list of those items below:
Accepted items for recycling

Toiletry items (unopened items only)

Furniture
- Examples: sofas, small dressers, chairs, tables, etc.
- Note: large, heavy, or outdated items may be turned away by event staff/volunteers
Mattresses and box springs (twin, double, and queen only)

Clothing, shoes, purses
A press release outlining the drive-thru event Friday included statements about donation protocols:
Donation items must be clean, in good working order, and in good condition (meaning no rips, tears, stains, pet hair, food residue, damage, etc.). Items may be turned away by event staff/volunteers that are not able to be recycled or donated. All donations will go directly to our non-profit partners who will put items to vital use for those in need in our community. Those donations can be dropped off at the city’s drive-thru event on Sunday, July 21st. That will run from noon to 4 p.m. on the lower level of the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp in downtown Iowa City.
Organizers say those items are intended to help support those that are currently in the process of moving. You can read more about the donation drive-thru event here.
