FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Twenty-two local non-profit organizations were awarded $400,000 in grants by the City of Fort Wayne, the City announced at the Fort Wayne Urban League Wednesday.
The grants come from the City’s federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) dollars, with a focus on helping low to moderate-income Fort Wayne residents with shelter and basic needs, language services, employment skills and youth development.
While many cities have cut non-profit funding due to federal CDBG cuts in the past decade, Fort Wayne continues to allocate CDBG grants to non-profits. The grants are awarded in a competitive process based on application scores and funding recommendations based on goals developed by the organization and area residents.
Mayor Sharon Tucker said the grants can help non-profit organizations make a greater difference in the community.
“My administration is committed to providing an enhanced quality of life for all residents in Fort Wayne. We care about people and want the best for individuals and families in our community,” Tucker said. “Our partner organizations are making a meaningful difference to provide needed programming and services. By working together we’re able to accomplish so much more and impact many lives in a positive way.”
