SAN ANTONIO (CNN Newsource/KENS/WKRC) – When a homeless man and the owner of a new landscaping business had a chance meeting, it would change both of their lives forever.
“I’ve always had it rough,” said Walter Madden. “I started out downtown living in the streets.”
Walter Madden lived on the streets for 11 years until he had a chance encounter with Chad Huff. Huff had just opened Chad’s Landscaping and was looking for dependable staff to get the business off the ground.
The pair met in the field Madden was living in, and neither seemed to expect much from the other at first.
“The look on his face was ‘maybe he’ll last a day,’ right?” Madden said.
After the pair started working together, it was a totally different story.
“Always there,” Huff said of Madden. “The guy that I needed to stick by my side to get this business going.”
Madden has worked for Chad’s Landscaping for over two decades. Despite reaching the age of 76 this year, Madden isn’t slowing down. He said he’s “very thankful.”
“There is no word for it,” he said. “It is something I feel inside of me.”
