This is a win-win for Microsoft and Meta.

They say the VR market is a fraction of a percent of the entire video game market; a rounding error that can safely be ignored. As someone who writes about VR somewhat regularly, it’s not hard to believe. Meta may have made over a billion dollars in revenue last quarter thanks to the Quest 3, but VR fans are still the few and the proud – big emphasis on ‘the few’.
But we die-hards have been seeing the pieces move into place for mass VR adoption for a while now. I called December’s Quest 3 update, which added Xbox Game Pass to the platform, a literal game changer. It certainly has been for me. I’ve been getting a lot of value out of my Game Pass subscription lately thanks to recent additions like Botany Manor, Another Crab’s Treasure, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, and Harold Halibut, and rather than jam up my PC’s SSDs with more games or try to play them on my little tablet, I’ve been reaching for the Quest 3 to use Game Pass every time.
While the games aren’t in 3D or fully immersive like VR games, using the Quest 3 to play Game Pass is still one of the best ways to play. You get a screen the size of a movie theater and the benefit of a headset that blocks out the rest of the world. As someone who has a terrible habit of picking up my phone during every cutscene and lull in the action, the Quest 3 has helped me engage with the games I’m playing on a deeper level.

As much as Quest 3 owners have benefited from having Xbox Game Pass on the platform, it seems like word hasn’t gotten out yet to the console players. The Quest 3 could be an alternative to buying an actual Xbox, and using the headset for Game Pass could be a nice gateway into VR games for people who still haven’t tried it. It seems like Meta and Microsoft feel the same way, because an Xbox branded-Quest headset is reportedly on the way.
We’ve seen brand exchanges like this before. Last year, Backbone launched a PlayStation Edition of the Backbone One mobile controller – an all-white version that replaces the ABXY face buttons with PlayStation’s cross, square, circle, and triangle. The Xbox Quest 3 will be similar – a black-and-green version of the headset instead of the Meta white – but it will also come with an Xbox controller and a Game Pass subscription. If you’ve been wondering when Microsoft was going to make a mobile Game Pass machine, well this is it, and they got Meta to make it for them.

It’s a pretty genius branding play that fits perfectly with Microsoft’s vision for the future, foran Xbox that can be played anywhere on any platform. Sony has so far proven with the PSVR and PSVR2 that bespoke headsets are a poor investment, and its inability to support the PSVR2 only a year after launch seems to be doing more harm than good for the company. Microsoft wisely recognized that existing VR hardware is already well equipped for the massive library of content that’s already available on Game Pass. The Xbox Quest doesn’t add anything new, but it’s going to help Xbox fans understand what a VR headset has to offer.
This is so much better than an actual Xbox VR headset like the PSVR. Anyone disappointed that Microsoft isn’t working on Halo VR or other first-party VR content will quickly forget their frustrations when they find hundreds of the best VR games ever made already available on the Quest 3’s massive library. And who knows? Maybe this partnership means Xbox is working on first-party games for the Quest.
If the price is right and the marketing is focused, the Xbox headset could be an incredible entry point for VR. Even if Xbox fans buy the headset for Game Pass and never get around to Asgard’s Wrath 2 or Assassin’s Creed Nexus, they’ll still find a better Game Pass experience than anywhere else.
