The former president faces four years in prison after being found guilty of falsifying business records in order to commit election fraud, and the internet rightfully decided to meme his misery
Yesterday (30 May), Donald J Trump, the 45th president of the United States, was found guilty of falsifying business records in order to commit election fraud.
Trump faced 34 charges of falsifying business records and was found guilty on each count. This was a particularly historic case as Trump is not only the first former president to be indicted but the first to ever be criminally convicted.
The former president now faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison. However, others convicted of the same crime often receive shorter sentences, fines or probation. Trump is set to be sentenced on 11 July, days before the start of the Republican National Convention on 15 July, where he is expected to be formally nominated for president.
While this is a cause for celebration, you can never celebrate these victories for too long because the American political system runs solely on vibes. Even though Trump is a convicted felon, he can still run for president as the US Constitution states that to be eligible one needs only to be born in the US, be over 35 and have lived in the US for at least 14 years. The requirement mentions nothing about being a convicted criminal.
Trump might be president of the United States again in November. But this revelation hasn’t soured the internet’s mood. Instead, people came together to laugh and meme his misfortune, and I think that’s beautiful.
Here’s a selection of the best memes that circulated on the internet last night:
