On Friday, a Supreme Court ruling allowed cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside in public places. A similar policy has already been in place in Huntsville. First-Stop of Huntsville president of the board of directors, Tim Davis, explained how the organization may see the impact of these changes.
For the last eight years, Davis has dedicated his time to the First Stop of Huntsville’s mission, which is to encounter homeless residents, connect them with services and support, and empower them towards sustainable living. Davis says there’s no easy answer when it comes to homelessness, and he suggests each city will experiment with different approaches. Despite the challenges, he believes Huntsville will find a good solution.
Davis stated, “This city, Huntsville, is very compassionate and very well led, and I expect to see a very strong and continuing desire to find a good solution to this.”
He believes that First Stop and other nonprofits will have to find greater capacity for both shelter and services.
“I think the non-profits are going to have greater capacity, both for the people who provide shelter and for us who provide the services, and how we can get better or more efficient services to move people more quickly,” said Davis. “So I think it’ll be a lot of work for us nonprofits, but the city, I think, will be fully involved in that and where to find good solutions.”
Tim says they are looking for a lot of help from the community right now, and any support for the first stop would be greatly appreciated.
